The Weekend Series: five iconic pie shops worth detouring for

As much as we love a cheeky servo pie, the Australian culinary staple has so much more to offer if we don’t settle for the most convenient option. South East Queensland is home to a plethora of charming pie institutions that have been baking the golden goods for generations. Nothing makes a road-trip better than swinging through and sampling the fine fare of these pie shops, so we’ve picked five that are flaky in all the right ways.

Yatala Pies, Yatala
Can a pie shop get more iconic than this? Yatala is a name synonymous with salivation-inducing pies, with this landmark enticing drivers cruising down the M1 with its freshly baked allure for years. From the traditional meat pie to steak and mushroom, chicken and vegetable, steak and kidney and more, Yatala Pies has set the pie standard sky high. Anyone heading between Brisbane and the Gold Coast will tell you it doesn’t get much better than this, and if reputation is anything to go by then Yatala Pies should be at the top of your hit list.

Vincenzo’s at the Big Apple, Thulimbah
A weekend away in the Granite Belt or at Stanthorpe sounds like a perfect way to unwind, and one added bonus of making the trip is the chance to stop by Vincenzo’s at the Big Apple for a flaky feast. Vincenzo’s is called the must-stop shop and for good reason – it’s got everything you could need, from wine and smallgoods to gifts and produce. That being said, it’s the pies you’re here to try. This spot offers up some remarkable morsels, include steak, lamb or chicken pies served with beer-battered chips, mushy peas, mashed potato or gravy. You’d be hard-pressed to resist the temptation to order the lot.

Old Fernvale Bakery, Fernvale
The leafy surrounds of the Brisbane Valley are home to a positively charming bakery that prides itself on making pies that people travel long distances to obtain. For more than three decades The Old Fernvale Bakery has racked up numerous pie awards – reportedly more than any other shop in Queensland – and it’s thanks to quality ingredients and sheer variety. Wagyu, Angus and Charolais beef feature across the menu at this storied landmark, alongside unique combinations such as corned beef and white sauce, steak, cauliflower and cheese, chicken and mango, minted lamb, pork and apple and much more.

The Outpost Cafe, Canungra
Nestled in the heart of the Gold Coast hinterland is a fantastic cafe and pit stop that earns a crust (pun intended) by dishing out phenomenal homemade pies. The Outpost Cafe has been drawing in tourists by the truckload for years, keeping them fed and watered from inside its repurposed army barracks abode. When it comes to the pies, all flavours are hand made on site with locally sourced beef, no additives and fluffy pasty. All the classics are represented, from chunky steak, to steak and cracked pepper, steak, bacon and Guinness, chicken and mushroom and more.

Humble Pie, Billinudgel
If you’re cruising to Byron Bay for a beach getaway, make a quick stop in Billinudgel and swing by Humble Pie. This popular manufacturer of specialty pies and pasties has been doing great work since 1982, and is recommended for anyone that is craving a bite on the road. While you’ll be able to nab a classic steak pie if you so desire, you’d be remiss to overlook the unique flavours on offer. Get out of your comfort zone and try the curried lentil, Thai tofu and Asian greens, beef stroganoff or corn and asparagus pies – we’re sure you’ll be smitten.
