The round-up: tuck into take-home tacos, tequila and taquitos at the Gold Coast’s best Mexican restaurants

Following some encouraging signs that we’ve flattened the curve (such a 2020 thing to say), some of Queensland’s restrictions are beginning to be lifted – hooray! Whilst we are bursting at the seams with excitement at the thought of eating our body weight in tacos and sipping margs with mates, restaurants are required to enforce some pretty strict capacity limits so it may still be some time before it’s possible to do so safely. The good news is that even if you missed out on a booking or you’re keen to hang back and wait a few weeks, there are still plenty of places that are dishing up some excellent takeaway options. We’ve round up a few of the best Mexican restaurants on the Gold Coast for takeaway because no one said we Mexican’t.

Margarita Cartel, Burleigh Heads
Love margaritas? Love tacos? Love them both whilst sitting in your tracksuit pants watching tv? Do yourself a favour and get acquainted with Margarita Cartel. You’ll find crowd-pleasing, street-style Mexican fare ranging from pequenos (small bites) through to burritos (jammed with chilli frijoles) and spice-rubbed half chicken prepared on a traditional South American grill all available to takeaway – order here. Feeding a tiny tribe? Check out the Cartel Value Packs for two or four people.

Bonita Bonita, Mermaid Beach
As one of the coast’s first modern-Mexican eateries, Bonita Bonita has earned a small army of fans who can’t get enough of the venue’s top-notch nosh. Here’s a fun fact – on Thursday you can wrap your mitts around a tasty taco for just $5 – it’s happiness by the handful! To order jump online here, just don’t forget the DIY coconut margaritas.

Frida Sol, Palm Beach
This is the younger, sassy sibling of Bonita Bonita so you know you’re in for a real good time. Frida’s entire menu is available to takeaway so you can eat chimichangas in your undies at home, if that’s your thing. Order online here.

Caracara Cantina
, Tugun
While relatively new to the list, Caracara Cantina has quickly proven itself as a go-to for tasty tacos, quality margaritas and top-shelf tequila in Tugun. If you’re keen for a fiesta at home, call 0422 416 889 to place an order for pick-up.

Hail Mary, Burleigh Heads
Tucked in about half way down James Street, Hail Mary is somewhat of a local secret. The restaurant is currently undergoing a little refurb before opening to diners but they are still dishing up some seriously mouthwatering Mexican to-go. The best part? Free delivery for orders over $50 in the 4220 area. Call 07 5576 5050 to order.

Mexicali, Nobby Beach
From Baja-style fish tacos and chorizo quesadillas to street-style corn and glorious guac’, Mexicali’s mouth-watering menu is filled with fresh and delicious bites that are all available to takeaway! Take a peek at the menu here and order by calling 07 5572 0588. You can even score free delivery for orders over $50 if you live nearby.

La Diosa, Surfers Paradise
For Mexico City-style tacos, La Diosa Mexicana is where it’s at. Located in the Circle on Cavill precinct, the restaurant and bar specialises in ‘al pastor’ tacos – using a traditional style of spit-grilled meat that was introduced to Mexico City by Lebanese immigrants back in the early 1900s. Peep the menu here and call 07 5592 4343 to place your order for pick-up.

California Tacos, Burleigh Heads
If you have a serious hankering for Mexican, make haste to California Tacos in Burleigh Heads for what is humbly referred to as the largest plate of nachos in Australia. Although technically it’s made for sharing, no one will judge you if you devour the entire plate yourself. See, there are advantages to iso! Take a look at the menu here and order via UberEats.

Montezumas, Burleigh Heads
Serving hungry locals since 1978 from within the Burleigh Theatre Arcade, Montey’s is known for its massive menu of comforting Mexican eats. Tacos, burritos, enchiladas, nachos, tostadas, taquitos, hot tamale pies and more are all available to takeaway from the little shop fronting the Gold Coast Highway (next to Stone’s Throw). To order call 07 5576 2844.

The Collective, Palm Beach
There are five kitchens under one roof at The Collective, and one of them is Calavera Cantina. Armed with a full menu of Mexican eats, you can enjoy everything from tacos and nachos to fajitas, beef cheeks in mole sauce, as well as smaller bites like manchego-stuffed albondigas (Mexican meatballs) at home – hurrah! Take a look at the menu here and order online here.

Goodness Gracias, Palm Beach
If you love tacos and burritos but are a little short on time, this grab-and-go eatery will curb your cravings for street-style eats like tacos, burritos, tostadas and vibrant salads. The best part? Goodness Gracias is entirely plant based! Take a peek at the menu here.
