Mario’s retains 27 years of delicious Italian history with its brand-new digs

For the past 27 years, if you walked through the Broadbeach Mall by night, you would hear a vibrant hum. The sound, which was created by hundreds of people eating, chatting, laughing and clinking wine glasses, was coming from a jam-packed Mario's Italian – one of the Gold Coast's longest-running restaurants. For the first time in its deliciously rich history, the Broadbeach icon recently closed its doors to undergo an expansion and complete transformation. Let us introduce you to the new Mario's.

For the creatures of habit among us that don’t like change – it’s time to embrace it. Mario’s if proof that you can completely re-build and reinvent a venue whilst maintaining 27 years of history. There’s a new look, a brand-new bar (and a killer cocktail list to boot) and a refined yet cosy vibe. Locals would remember Mario’s as being packed-full every night – the alfresco tables beneath the dangling faux greenery was the ultimate spot to enjoy your handmade pizza and moreish pasta. If you’ve spent plenty of nights rolling out of Mario’s with a big smile and a belly full of garlic bread and wine over the years, then you can rest assured that this Italian gem has retained its authentic, family-run atmosphere – but now there’s just a bit of extra sparkle.

The menu has had a few refinements and tweaks. Most of the old favourites remain, much to the delight of the regulars, but there are a couple of new elements that have been infused to attract the discerning tastes of local foodies as well. Keep it simple with spaghetti and meatballs, opt for steamed black mussels in white wine napoli with crusty bread, or live on the edge with the famous ‘fritto misto’ with grilled bugs, calamari and prawns alongside baked scallops, smoked salmon and oysters. Mario’s owners, the Dimattina and Ierna families, are also in the process of rebuilding their neighbouring venue, formerly Alto Cucina & Bar, which will reopen in the coming weeks as Beachside Pavilion. It all forms part of major redevelopment works at The Oasis, which are currently underway.

If you’re keen to lift the lid on the new-look Mario’s, head over to our Stumble Guide for its opening hours and location.
