Manhattan on Hope brings New York vibes and Italian tastes to the north

Northern Gold Coast folk, throw your hands in the air – a little piece of New York has landed in your hood. Manhattan on Hope, a swish new American-Italian restaurant has opened its doors in the heart of Hope Island, bringing an impressive share-food menu, a grand cocktail bar and a sophisticated Gatsby-style vibe to the city's north.

Manhattan on Hope is the latest venture from local hospitality identity Jo-Anne Taylor, who also owns neighbouring steakhouse New York New York and cafe and cocktail lounge Tiffany’s, which both opened in 2015. The three sibling venues sit side by side, creating the ultimate contemporary American foodie hub. Manhattan on Hope sticks to its roots by aiming to emulate the atmosphere and all-encompassing dining experiences seen in the American hospitality scene – think authentic food, trendy cocktails and a buzzing vibe spread across a 50-seat bar and a stylish 110-seat restaurant. As for the fit-out – no detail has been overlooked, from the grand chandeliers to the deep-blue velvet booths and the gold-trimmed bar. You’ll need to spend solid few few minutes to let your eyes wander throughout the impressive interior … then it’s time to think about the food.

The American-Italian-style menu leans toward share-food dining, with breakfast, lunch and dinner served seven days. The breakfast spread features everything from the classic bacon and eggs through to more authentic dishes like bruschetta with crispy pancetta and truffle pecorino, lambs fry with onion jus, pulled pork with apple cider, hollandaise, pork crackle and poached egg, as well as the Perfect Fried Duck Egg, served with asparagus, prosciutto, pecorino truffle oil and ciabatta crumbs. The lunch and dinner menu is designed to suit all tastes – the idea here is to eat, drink and share, as if you were sitting around Nonna’s table. Start with a salumi board or polenta fritters with balsamic pearls, before moving into lighter options with the likes of a traditional caprese salad, venison carpaccio, or the ricotta and balsamic tart with tomato sorbet.

There’s a delicious series of authentic pasta dishes (good luck deciding), though you can’t go past the pan-fried gnocchi with rabbit ragu. Pull apart a hand-made pizza, then get yourself acquainted with something a little heartier – like the veal cutlet parmigiana, the pork belly with puffed pork skin and pork jus, or if you’re a seafood lover, the grilled Fruitti Di Mare (a delicious seafood platter) will do the trick. Finish the right way with a deconstructed lemon meringue pie, or perhaps a mocha semi freddo with chocolate soil and popcorn rocks. Oh, and you’ll also be treated to some of the best waterfront views in town.
