Beloved culinary queen Maggie Beer is here to elevate isolation with wholesome online cooking classes

It only takes a quick one-minute scroll through Instagram to realise that everyone is suddenly living their best iso lives in the kitchen. Cookies, muffins, bread, pasta sauces and pickles – so many people are giving it a red-hot crack and we are absolutely here for it. Do you know what we're not here for? Burnt and soul-crushingly inedible banana bread. Making rock-hard cookies that resemble golf balls. Oh, and not being able to poach eggs like our favourite cafe down the road. Everything is going to be a-okay, though – because sweet angel Maggie Beer is here to get those of us who simply do not excel in the kitchen through these trying times.

That’s right, Australian cooking icon and queen of the kitchen Maggie Beer is sharing all of her tips and tricks with a new series of homestyle online cooking classes. Through her Instagram and Facebook accounts, Maggie is live streaming tutorials for quick, simple meals using minimal ingredients that most of us would have lying around in our fridges and pantries. Each day, Maggie sets up in her Barossa Valley kitchen, which she refers to as her ‘happy place’, films herself making the day’s dish on her own phone, then posts them to IGTV and Facebook – and it’s honestly the most wholesome 15-ish minutes of cooking content you will come across.

So far, we’ve seen recipes like tomato and bread salad, eggplants and eggs, chicken thighs and tomatoes and also a how-to on versatile chicken brodo (broth), with plenty more homestyle-cooking goodness to come. In the videos, Maggie openly admits she too is learning this online streaming concept as she goes – so it’s all very casual and easy to follow, just like spending time in the kitchen with your mother or grandmother. Maggie Beer is an actual human sunbeam and these videos will certainly make you smile and want to jump through the screen and hug her. On that note – how good are hugs? Can’t wait until we’re allowed to do that again because those ‘foot taps’ are very, very odd.
