Japanese cafe Koto Sanpo brings matcha teas and bento boxes to Broadbeach

The ancient city of Kyoto is a spiritual hub in Japan, known for its rich history and tradition, where hidden teahouses dishing up authentic matcha creations and intriguing eats are often found abuzz with locals. If you've got this culture-dipped city on your bucket list but haven't quite made it over, then a visit to Koto Sanpo could be the next best thing.

The new Kyoto-inspired cafe and eatery recently opened its doors at Pacific Fair Shopping Centre – and it’s in good company with the likes of Japanese havens Hakataya Ramen and Hokkaido Baked Cheese Tart just footsteps away. All of the best elements you’d find in an authentic Japanese cafe – from century-old recipes to intricate plating and refined service – have been bottled up to create Koto Sanpo, with its eye-catching menu of matcha-based teas and desserts, savoury dishes and intricate sweets designed to respectfully balance traditional Kyoto cuisine with modern techniques.

Matcha, essentially a raw version of green tea, is the hero here, served in the form of latte bowls, sweet frappes, as a ‘float’ topped with soft-serve and over ice as a refreshing tea. The matcha madness doesn’t end there – you’ll also find a decadent selection of green-hued desserts from matcha French toast to eye-popping fruit-laced parfaits and delicate cakes. Koto Sanpo’s all-day menu is also dotted with traditional Japanese savoury dishes featuring the likes of fresh-made sushi sets, bento boxes, matcha-infused udon noodles, pork-katsu sandwiches with nori fries, piping-hot katsu and karaage curries, and Japanese-style spaghetti topped with pollock roe and a 63-degree egg.

Intrigued? Head to our Stumble Guide for Koto Sanpo’s opening hours, location and contact details.

The Stumble Guide is our comprehensive Gold Coast dining guide with more than 870 places to eat, drink, shop and play.
