Broadbeach institution Koi reopens after a million-dollar facelift

It was 13 years ago when Koi first opened in the heart of Broadbeach. Gracing the main corner of Surf Parade, Koi became known over the years for its Sunday sessions (which birthed The Koi Boys), dancing in the street, and its modern-Australian fare. After completely rebuilding the venue from scratch – to the tune of more than $1 million – owner Patrick Gennari has this week unveiled Koi 2.0. Yes, the timing is extremely unfortunate, but let's consider this a glimmer of good news that Koi 2.0 is back bigger and better than ever, and is set for another decade of delivering great food and good times for all.

Not a single nail was left when Koi was demolished in late January. As part of the works, the venue has also expanded, taking over the neighbouring space that was most recently occupied by Miss Margarita. Technically, the new Koi will now seat around 240 diners across intimate two-seat nooks, larger group tables and booths – though, that number has condensed significantly at the moment due to the current capacity restrictions for indoor venues. There’s now a commanding 10-metre-plus wrap-around bar that leads through to an open-plan kitchen area where you can catch the chef’s theatrics and watch steaks flaming through a glass viewing window.

There’s an entirely new menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Of a morning, there’s dishes like Mooloolaba-crab scramble with chilli oil and lemon gel, a croque madame with truffle bechamel and a pina colada bircher. Around midday, the crowd-pleasing menu shifts with smaller bites (think prawn toast, smoked-cheese croquettes and saganaki with honey), salads and pastas, steaks and pizzas. Much of the lunch offering carries through to dinner, though at night you’ll find a series of larger share plates like a mussel hot pot with crusty bread, whole baby snapper with salsa verde and herb salad, and a selection of high-grade steaks, each chargrilled and served with a piece of garlic-infused roasted bone marrow. Regulars will be pleased to learn that the signature sand-crab lasagne topped with abalone cream sauce and tempura soft-shell crab (if you know, you know) remains on Koi’s menu.

Note: Koi is open, but with current situation and restrictions, is also offering most of its menu to take away and is also now on Uber Eats for the first time. Be sure to keep your eyes on its Instagram for any updates.
