Popular Melbourne fish and chippery Hunky Dory opens in Palm Beach

When fish-and-chip eatery Hunky Dory first opened in Melbourne in 2004, its intention was to offer healthier, Greek Islands-inspired seafood options alongside classic fish and chips, while shifting away from the traditional 'takeaway food' model to encourage locals to dine in with a glass of wine or beer. Clearly it's a concept that resonated with southern folk – there are now 14 locations dotted across Melbourne and greater Victoria. Now, it's our turn.

Just last week, Queensland’s first Hunky Dory opened right here on the Gold Coast, with Palm Beach chosen as the location for the brand’s first foray into the sunny state. Melbourne locals Tory Trewhitt (who also opened Hunky Dory in Byron Bay last year, the first-ever location outside of Victoria) and Mouhammad Merhabi are behind the famed fish and chippery’s flagship Queensland restaurant, which is perched on the corner of the Pavilions Palm Beach precinct. Keeping in with Hunky Dory’s ethos of dishing up fresh, local seafood and tasty and healthy made-to-order meals, you’ll find an extensive and crowd-pleasing menu of eats to suit pretty much everyone – there’s even ‘fishless fish’ for the plant-based folk.

Sticklers for traditional fish and chips can select from the fried packs, loaded with flake fillets and guilty pleasures like dim sims, potato scallops and fried calamari rings – or opt for something lighter with the signature grilled fish (eye off your preferred catch of salmon, barramundi, snapper and rotating local catches in the cabinet), served with either rice, salad or chippies. Get a hit of freshness with the poke-bowl-style Hunky Bowls, which come loaded with lemon-and-dill-infused brown rice and a rainbow of vegetables and salad, before being topped with your choice of grilled fish, chargrilled calamari or fried cauliflower. There are vegan options aplenty like The New School fried ‘fish’ packs with plant-based fishless fillets, sweet-potato wedges, as well as vibrant salads, plant-based fish wraps and vegan-friendly spring rolls and potato cakes. Keen for a burger? Choose from the American-style Royale burg’ (complete with pickles, American cheese and mustard), or wrap your mitts around the parmesan-panko fish burger with creamy slaw and spicy sauce. If you’re dining in, pair your fishy feast with Australian wines (all of the shades) or an ice-cold craft beer.

Hunky Dory is now open! Head to the Stumble Guide for its opening hours and contact details.
