Let’s get one thing clear right from the outset – this is not your run-of-the-mill market. Harris Farm Markets has been connecting families and farmers for 40 years, and the famed local supplier is opening the doors to an enormous 1500-sqm space at Capri on Via Roma, Isle of Capri this Thursday November 18. It will be an epicurean wonderland of the freshest fruit and veg from local farmers, a grocery section brimming with boutique and locally made products, a dedicated cheese boardwalk that features more than 400 cheeses (not a typo), a premium butcher that encourages nose-to-tail consumption and a fish market that supports a sustainable model. The fishmonger, owned and operated by the Papacosta family, is set to offer the likes of wild barramundi from Far North Cairns and Great Barrier Reef coral trout, as well as fresh tiger prawns from local waters, just in time for summer. As if that’s not enough deliciousness, Byron Bay and Tweed Heads’ Bread Social will also form part of the venue’s cornerstone offering with an impossible-to-resist array of baked goods for you to devour daily. Adding a little drama to your sourdough selection, the bread (which is baked on the mezzanine level) will be dropped down to you via a conveyor belt, creating a kind of bread waterfall that we definitely want to find ourselves beneath. Plant-based pals will be well and truly catered for with more than 150 plant-based products including Bite Me Fine Foods, Golden Falafel, Suzy Spoon, The Green Lion, Veglicious Kitchen and Wildly Good, alongside self-serve nut butter stations as well as milk and honey on tap.
Harris Farm Markets’ Gold Coast outpost will also feature its ‘Imperfect Picks’, which aims to tackle the grim statistic that 25 percent of Australian crops never leave the farm gate because they are a bit, well, unattractive, and do not meet the visual specifications of some supermarkets. To further demonstrate Harris Farm Markets’ commitment to eliminating food wastage, it will also carry its newly launched ‘Re-purposeful Picks‘, which sees fruit and vegetables saved from the trash via some ingenious upcycling techniques that help extend shelf life and prolong tastiness – think smoothies made from upcycled fruit, breadcrumbs made from excess bread, air-fried kale chips, pesto and vegetable-topped pizzas. Oh, and don’t forget your reusable bags, because Harris Farm Markets was the first to ban the plastic bag.
