Appreciate simplicity and excellent coffee with the Hario V60

With everything around us getting more and more complex and user manuals that resemble Tolstoy’s War and Peace, it’s somewhat comforting to know that the V60 exists in all its perfect simplicity.

With no moving parts or electronics to speak of, the Hario V60 pour over is simultaneously both simple, in the way you simply pour water over coffee grinds to extract flavour, and complex, in the sense that there are many variables that can alter the final cup flavour including bean origin, roast degree, grind particle size, water temperature, bloom time and extraction rate, to name a few.

To use the V60, simply fold a paper filter along the seams, place inside the cone and rinse with hot water. Add 10 to 12-grams of freshly ground coffee in a medium to fine grind and shake it lightly to level. Take near boiling water and pour the hot water slowly to moisten the grounds from the centre outward in a circular pattern and wait 30-seconds. This is known as the ‘bloom’. Start slowly adding more water using the same speed and swirling motion and in three minutes, your brew is ready. The gentle, ritualistic process results in a beautifully clean cup of coffee that allows the full terroir of the beans to be truly appreciated. The Hario V60 pour over cup and its recommended accompaniments are available for purchase at Paradox Coffee Roasters at The 4217 in Surfers Paradise. The coffee connoisseurs can also sort you out with a bag of their Light Roasted Single Origin so you can enjoy the true cafe experience at home.
