Mermaid Beach eatery FuFu reinvents itself with a sleek new look, moody vibes and fancy bites

Back in March 2018, Gold Coast restaurateur Morgan Walsh (the founder of Bonita Bonita and The Milkman's Daughter, and owner of Poké Poké) gifted the city with a fun new American-Chinese diner by the name of FuFu. Over the past few weeks, Morgan and the team have been working around the clock to implement exciting changes for the popular Mermaid Beach eatery, giving it a whole new look and shifting its culinary direction entirely. Friends, meet FuFu 2.0.

It’s still the same cheeky, fun FuFu we have all come to love – just think of it as being all grown up. Morgan, who is also known under her fit-out and interior design guise Growling Tiger Designs, has subbed out FuFu’s original bright, cute, pastel-hued aesthetic for a darker, more sophisticated and moody vibe. The all-white furnishings and pink velvet booths are no longer, instead it’s high tables, tones of black and sleek concrete, and dimly lit pendant lights. The sleek new look is in line with FuFu’s revamped and more concise food offering, which sees it pivot away from heavier Chinese-American eats, moreish bites and soda pops, toward a menu of refined modern-Asian dishes, cocktails and top-notch wines. (In saying that, the Big Mac spring rolls are staying – so you may breathe a sigh of relief).

At FuFu 2.0, you’ll now start with smaller plates like tuna ceviche with yuzu, wasabi peas and pickled onion, soy and sesame salmon sashimi, and the ‘tom yum’ zucchini with fresh shallots and ginger. As for the larger share-style dishes, think sweet-and-sour pork belly with chargrilled pineapple, tender beef cheek served with broth and a ginger mash, and a crispy Vietnamese crepe brimming with pork, prawns and a yuzu salad. There’s also a warming yellow prawn curry with flaky roti bread on the list, as well as lighter plates like barramundi topped with nuggets of sticky pork belly and a punchy apple salad. In the coming weeks, FuFu will also be introducing a takeaway window at the rear of the building, where hungry folk can order street eats and access a full takeaway burger menu to devour in the comfort of their own home. We’re talking FuFu-style burgs’ like fried chicken with bearnaise sauce, cheese, green cabbage and habanero jam, and panko-crumbed cauliflower burgers with pea molé, vegan mayonnaise and pickled onion. Hot tip – if you want to order takeaway eats or burgers now, you totally can! The take-home menu is up and running, and the physical window isn’t far off.

It doesn’t stop there. Armed with an eclectic facelift and delicious new direction, FuFu will soon be launching bottomless brunches and lunches on Saturdays for those into sipping free-flowing mimosas with Asian-style eats (that’s us).

Head over to the Stumble Guide for FuFu’s new hours, contact details and all that jazz.

The Stumble Guide is our comprehensive Gold Coast dining guide with more than 870 places to eat, drink, shop and play.
