American eats and boozy shakes – Fat Freddy’s Beach Bar & Diner arrives in Broadbeach

For the past few months, all eyes have been curiously peering on the new multi-venue dining hub that sits below the luxury Avani hotel in Broadbeach. Over the weekend, the first of three restaurants in the new $8-million precinct opened to the public – Fat Freddy's Beach Bar & Diner. With a menu of towering burgers, loaded hot dogs, whisky-spiked milkshakes and late-night snacks, the casual newcomer is to aiming to reinvent the classic American diner experience.

The details
Enjoying prime position along Surf Parade in Broadbeach, Fat Freddy’s Beach Bar & Diner will be the most laid-back offering in the striking new 1900-sqm dining precinct. Its opening will be promptly followed by a Gold Coast incarnation of Noosa-born favourite Miss Moneypenny’s, as well as a high-end private dining space named The Rimini RoomBen Walsh of hospitality firm The Good Time Group is behind the multi-million-dollar project, which has come to life under the creative eye of Sydney’s Paul Kelly Designs. On the ground, acclaimed chef Braden White, formerly of Brisbane’s Stokehouse Q, The Apo and Noosa’s Ricky’s River Bar and Restaurant, will oversee the culinary offerings across each of the venues.

The food
For Fat Freddy’s, Braden and the team have fine-tuned traditional American fare, reimagining moreish dishes (from burgers to bar bites) while ensuring the crowd-pleasing flavours still shine through. The menu starts with beer-friendly bites like barbecue-spiced popcorn tossed in bacon butter, breaded bacon bits with candied chilli, wagyu beef jerky with smoked-ale cream, and decadent four-cheese mac’n’cheese croquettes blanketed in parmesan. From there, you move on with a Lousiana-style po’ boy with poached Moreton Bay bug and salted-lemon mayo on a buttery roll, the New York street-style hot dog topped off with mustard, white-onion relish, smoked ketchup and crisp onions, and loaded tater tots topped with grilled ricotta, chilli salt, jalapeno and optional beef brisket. At Freddy’s, the classic cheeseburger is served simply with American cheddar, onions, mustard and ketchup (you can jazz it up however you like with extras like pickles, bacon and onion rings), or you can get stuck into barbecue pork ribs with a bourbon glaze, a striploin with onion rings and brisket-fat gravy, or a pepperoni and cheese pizza. Late-night snackers are in luck, with Fat Freddy’s dishing up eats until 11:00 pm every night, guaranteed.

The bar
The bar team are shaking, stirring and pouring a raft of tipples, from American whiskies and spiked sodas to boozy milkshakes and tapped cocktails. Beer swillers will find a tap line-up of American and Australian brews to sip – better yet, pair it with your favourite bourbon or rye whiskey to make it a boilermaker (served with housemade shortbread on the side). There’s also dessert-style libations like espresso-martini thick shakes with chocolate shavings, as well as reinvented cult classics like a Manhattan infused with a Budweiser reduction and the Bloody Caesar with a base of horseradish-infused vodka.
