Holy guacamole – Surfers Paradise is set to score a 250-seat Tex-Mex taco slinger

El Camino Cantina, the spirited, neon-lit Tex-Mex eatery and bar known for its supersized nachos oozing with cheese and big-as-your-head frozen margaritas, is set to open a second Gold Coast location on the beachfront in Surfers Paradise. The eye-popping new arrival, gleaming with neon lights and fluorescent signage, cuts a colourful figure within Paradise Centre's brand-new dining precinct (which you can read more about here). Here's everything we know so far ...

Taking pride of place overlooking the beachfront on the second level, El Camino Cantina will be a mammoth addition to the centre’s new restaurant strip, with 250 seats filling the eclectic, colour-dipped inside dining area and the festively lit alfresco area. The interior will be a fusion of Tex-Mex flair and urban edge with recycled brick walls, polished concrete floors and breeze block features. Hand-painted murals will adorn the walls including a custom-designed piece by Australian punk music and surf art icon Ben Brown featuring a thrill-seeking, wave-riding skeleton surfer in a sombrero and board shorts, naturally. The dining area will be peppered with a mix of booths, high-top large-group tables, settings for smaller groups, as well as custom-made swing-style seats (good luck navigating those after a couple of frozen margaritas). Joining locations in Robina, Sunshine Coast, Bowen HillsChermside, and South Bank, the Surfers iteration of El Camino will be the 13th for the brand and will delight diners with a never-ending fiesta of comforting Tex-Mex eats as well as the brand’s first breakfast offering, which is set to include fresh-squeezed juices and breakfast tacos.

If you’ve not yet had the pleasure of dining at El Camino Cantina, it goes a little something like this – start with a basket of tortilla chips and salsa, before perusing the menu filled with quintessential Tex-Mex belly-fillers. We recommend getting your hands dirty with a bowl of saucy buffalo wings, or dive straight in with the giant nachos smothered in melted cheese, black beans, chilli con carne, pico de gallo and a hefty scoop of sour cream and guacamole. The fajitas make for a fiery feast, and there’s a sizeable selection of tacos to choose from, with house-made tortillas topped with taste-bud tingling combinations like grilled al pastor pork shoulder with pineapple salsa and smoky barbecue sauce. Of course, a visit to El Camino won’t be complete without one of its signature giant margaritas. Served shaken or frozen, these must-try concoctions are served up in five tasty flavours – classic, strawberry, mango, tropical and a limited-edition mix that will rotate monthly. Best of all, the new El Camino will dish up the venue’s famous pocket-friendly specials including $2 Taco Tuesday and 10-cent Wing Wednesday and we’re told there may or may not be (there definitely will be) some bespoke menu items crafted exclusively for the new beachfront iteration. To say we’re excited is a pretty enormous understatement.

We’ll bring you all of the delicious details of the brand-new El Camino Cantina Surfers Paradise oh-so-soon.
