The team from Double Barrel Kitchen unveil a striking new waterfront venue in Benowa

Jess Winters and Peter Tutton have been curbing caffeine, breakfast and lunch cravings from their neighbourhood cafe Double Barrel Kitchen in the backstreets of Mermaid Waters since mid-2016. After capturing hearts and stomachs of locals in the area, the duo began to scout for a second location. As with their flagship cafe, Jess and Peter went against the grain and resisted the appeal of high-traffic coastal precincts, instead securing a striking waterfront location within Sunland's new Marina Concourse apartment development in Benowa.

After months of construction (a complete, from-scratch build) the doors to Double Barrel Kitchen & Bar swung open this week, revealing its luminous interior complete with timber furnishings, indoor and outdoor seating, and eye-catching decorative backlit arches housing the bar’s best drops. While sharing the same name, the second incarnation of Double Barrel steps effortlessly into restaurant and bar territory – it’s open seven days for breakfast and lunch (the long, wine-filled type if you’re that way inclined), and dinner on Friday and Saturday nights. On Sundays, the trade will extend until around 6:00 pm for afternoon sips and snacks on the waterfront.

Coffees by Supreme Roasters are pouring from 6:00 am, kicking off a breakfast menu of bakery bites (Burleigh Baker toasts, daily croissants, bagels), a selection of colourful bowls (granola, acai, oats and a savoury greens bowl) and breakfast classics like bacon and egg milk buns, and eggs benedict with ham off the bone or hot smoked trout. Most of the Mermaid Waters favourites have made their way onto the menu, alongside new additions like breakfast terrine served with balsamic-kissed asparagus, sauce gribiche and charred baguettes, and the apple and rosella country-style pie topped with coconut yoghurt and honeycomb.

One menu covers both the daily lunches and weekend dinners (though, lunchers also get a choice of burgers and a delicious pork banh mi roll), ranging from smaller bites and salads, right through to steaks, a series of mains and two-person shares plates. There’s lighter meals like beer-battered fish tacos with mango-chilli salsa, ham-hock and gruyere arancini balls and charcuterie boards, while the mains touch on both the land and sea with plates like roast-pork roulade topped with apple-cider jus and crackling, local king-prawn angel-hair pasta with crab-meat floss, and eight-hour slow-cooked beef ribs with a barbecue glaze. Behind the bar you’ll find a selection of wines, beers on tap, spirits and cocktails, which can be enjoyed with brunch, lunch, dinner or any time you feel like indulging in a tipple with a side of pristine water views. Oh, and BYO dog – it’s pup friendly!
