Way back in early March, we gave you a hot tip-off that the former Burleigh Co-Op site (the original Burleigh Social premises, up from Paddock Bakery) would soon be home to a leafy new brunch spot called Common Ground. Well, 'soon' it was not. COVID reared its ugly head and pushed the opening back a few months but here we are, in July, finally bringing you the thrilling news that Common Ground is officially open!

The Hibiscus Haven site has been given a fresh new identity by owners Euan and Bella Lovell (also part owners of Broadbeach bar Fig & Frankie’s) and Matt Tranter, who are looking to breathe new life into the storied premises, which has remained vacant since the departure of Burleigh Co-Op in late 2019. Specialty coffee, all-day brunch-style eats and on-the-go bites are what it’s all about at Common Ground, with the roller door opening from 7:00 am daily to start dispensing morning brews – courtesy of Burleigh roaster Social Espresso – to caffeine-deprived locals.

The debut menu is intentionally concise – though, once social-distancing measures are fully eased and the cafe can operate at its full capacity, the team will roll out a larger food offering, which will change with the seasons. For now, you can enjoy eats like whipped ricotta and avocado on sourdough with cured beetroot and cherry tomatoes, truffle-honey mushrooms and poached eggs with goats cheese roasted macadamia on rye bread, and a ciabatta breakfast bun with fried eggs, crispy bacon, chutney and hollandaise. Those not up for eggs and bacon can opt for the punchy turmeric and paprika-dusted cauliflower atop a bed of quinoa with pomegranate, greens and a honey-cumin yoghurt dressing, or tuck into the roasted pumpkin on sourdough with cashew cheese, onion petals and crispy kale.

In the cabinet you’ll find muffins, brownies and other rotating house-baked sweets, as well as grab-and-go savouries like haloumi croissants and a daily arrangement of sandwiches. The shelves are lined with pantry items and condiments (all made on site), so while you’re there you can stock up on essentials like The Bread Social’s finest loaves, jars of raspberry jam or the life-changing truffle honey and bring some of the Common Ground goodness home.
