Chef Katrina Barlow’s feet are now firmly on land for good. After spending the past eight years as a chef on an oil and gas exploration facility 300 kilometres off the west coast of Australia, she teamed up with business partner Cameron Shield to take over longstanding cafe Scooters at Kirra, closing it down to transform the ocean-front space and give it a new lease on life as Cafe All Sorts. As head chef, it’s Katrina you’ll find in the kitchen on the daily, crafting dishes from a menu that is driven by seasonality and familiar flavours. Brisbane favourite Fonzie Abbott Coffee is providing the sweet nectar, which is an ideal prelude the substantial breakfast offering that’s dotted with plenty of vegetarian and gluten-free options. There’s simple (and carnivorous) eats like the bacon, egg, Swish cheese and caramelised onion milk bun, while plant-based eaters can tuck into the sweet potato, red lentil and kale fritters topped with avocado, field mushrooms and cashew-dill cream.
Both snackers and feasters are well catered for at lunch time, with nibble-worthy options like za’atar-dusted flat breads with garlic hommus, and camembert cheese and caramelised-onion spring rolls gracing the menu. Got a big gap to fill? The ponzu-marinated chicken burger with sesame slaw and all of the trimmings will sort you out – and you can throw a plate of slow-cooked beef rendang-topped fries on the side while you’re at it. The cafe also doubles as an exhibition space for local artists, with the walls and tables adorned with a rotating assortment of works from various creatives – be warned, you’ll want to take it all home.
