The new Black Hops brewery tours, held monthly at Black Hops II (Biggera Waters), are hosted by the brewery’s resident beer guru and all-round cool human Leah Spong. The tour kicks off by taking things back to where it all began for the Black Hops founders, Dan Norris, Eddie Oldfield and Michael ‘Govs’ McGovern, with a short story-time session while enjoying a sample of the first beer to put Black Hops on the map – the Eggnog Stout.
From there, the tour essentially follows the brewing process throughout the facility – starting with the hops and yeast, and ending at the canning and labelling. In between, you’ll sip plenty of fresh beer straight from the source (hot tip – don’t drive) and go on a fun and informative journey, learning the ins and outs of how the Black Hops brews are created. Black Hops has always been known for its transparency – so ask all of the questions, take as many photos as you like, and also expect to hear all of the intriguing, nitty-gritty details as to how the humble Burleigh-born business came to be one of the country’s most favoured independent craft-beer brands.
The Black Hops brewery tours are $50 and include plenty of beers along the way – plus you’ll be gifted a four-pack of its iconic Pale Ale at the end. You definitely won’t leave thirsty! For more info and to sign up for the next tour, head to the Black Hops website.
