Black Hops unveils its new state-of-the-art brewery and taproom in Biggera Waters

In 2016, three Gold Coast lads – Eddie Oldfield, Dan Norris and Michael (Govs) McGovern – began craft-beer brewery, Black Hops. Buoyed by the coast's penchant for locally produced craft beer and in response to a demand for their beers outside of Queensland, the trio have significantly expanded their operations by opening a second brewery and taproom in Biggera Waters. Northern folk, get ready to sip – Black Hops II is here.

It’s been a huge three years of growth for Black Hops. It all started out as mere chatter about brewing while having a beer at the pub together back in 2014, then came a pilot brew (creating the now-famed eggnog stout), before a crowdfunding campaign in 2016 saw it become the first Australian brewery to launch via a crowdfunding platform. Funnily enough, that’s exactly how these savvy fellas have managed to get the second brewery off the ground. A record-breaking equity crowdfunding campaign last year, which raised more than $400,000 in just six days, allowed them to create this brand-new state-of-the-art full-scale production facility and taproom. While it’s a move to cement Black Hops’ status in the Australian craft-beer scene and meet pent-up nation-wide demand, the fellas retain their truly localised and humble approach – it will always be ‘beer, made by three mates on the Gold Coast’.

Black Hops II is mammoth in size compared to its original Burleigh location (it’s business as usual at that spot, by the way), featuring a 150-sqm taproom where locals can drop in for a beer and grab takeaways, while the neighbouring production facility will be available to explore via brewery tours. There will be 14 beers on tap, including core favourites like the Hornet IPA, Pale Ale and Lay Day, as well as a rotating series of taproom-only limited-release beers. The great thing is that Eddie, Dan and Govs know that, while it may be popular, they still have a job to do in educating people about craft beer. So, chat to them when you’re there – ask about their beers, how they are made, the differences between them, grab a tasting paddle, take a few tinnies or a growler home, find out what you like, what you don’t like. They want you to have fun with it – so go nuts.

Black Hops II is now open! Head to our Stumble Guide for the taproom’s location and opening hours.

The Stumble Guide is our comprehensive Gold Coast dining guide with more than 870 places to eat, drink, shop and play.
