Sustainable sips – Archie Rose launches new vintage series celebrating Australia’s annual harvest

Archie Rose Distilling Co has rolled merrily into the new year with a brand-new tipple that aims to capture the best flavours of the season that was. Gin lovers, say hello to Harvest 2019 Poorman's Orange Gin – the first spirit from the distiller's exciting new vintage series that celebrates the bounty and diversity of Australia’s annual harvest.

Archie Rose’s new annual release, named the Harvest Series, shines a glorious light on growers, providores, foragers and regions as a true expression of the ingredients and provenance. Each year the boutique distillery plan to release a different spirit – be it gin, vodka, whisky or rum – that has been created with a hero theme or ingredient to showcase the key local producers that they’ve worked with the previous year. Essentially, this limited-edition annual batch allows Archie Rose to focus on a raw ingredient, like a grain, fruit or botanical, and really invest in it – and the result is a delicious nod to the year that was, as well as their working relationships and the tastes that have captivated the team that season.

The first release under the label, Harvest Gin 2019, features the elusive and unassuming citrus called Poorman’s orange, which was grown by Peter Dryden and Elsa Payne in the Hunter Valley. If you haven’t got a clue what a Poorman’s orange is, well, it’s a kind of tangelo-pomelo hybrid with bright yellow skin that when distilled, offers hints of mandarin, sherbet and grapefruit. The orange is complemented by emerald green finger lime grown in Western Australia along with wild lemon-scented gum. The result is bold and complex sip with a naturally infused orange blossom blush that looks as refreshing as it tastes. Keen to give it a whirl? Archie Rose Harvest Gin 2019 is $89 a bottle and will be available to tickle tastebuds on February 24. We can’t wait to see what next year will bring …
