Mermaid’s beloved Apres Surf has ventured south to sling brews and bites in Burleigh Heads

Those who have been kicking around the coast for a hot minute and fancy a frothy are likely to have fond (hazy) memories that involve Apres Surf. The watering hole – nestled between a massage parlour and an Asian grocer in Mermaid Beach – found a loyal following of folk thanks to its refreshingly down-to-Earth approach to brews and bites. Unfortunately, the neighbourhood locale became a casualty of the development wave that is currently surging across the Gold Coast with the entire block set to be transformed into a supermarket. The Apres story, however, does not end there. We're stoked to reveal that Apres Surf has returned in a brand-new Burleigh Heads location. Here's everything you need to know about Apres 2.0 ...

It was a sad day when Apres Surf was forced to close its doors in Mermaid Beach for the final time. Lucky for us, owners James Angell and Richard O’Hanlon were not ones to sit idle and kept busy by hosting various pop-ups and kitchen take-overs to bide their time until they could come back, bigger and better. Froth fiends, that time has come. The much-loved bar has opened the doors to a brand-new Gold Coast Highway-fronting location, underneath Ambience On Burleigh Beach (neighbouring Macro Kitchen, Goukai RamenRabbath and Oh My Waffle). The new digs features plenty of throwbacks to its original incarnation, including the wooden booth seating and chequered floors, which were reclaimed from Mermaid, alongside the venue’s eclectic collection of art adorning the walls. Although brand-new, Apres Surf boasts a kind of been-there-forever feel, which makes you feel instantly at ease.

This time around, James and Richard have recruited chef Byron Taylor to round out the ownership team and put his spin on Apres’ elevated pub grub and post-surf snacks. When it comes to the booze and bites, Apres is not attempting to reinvent the wheel, so to speak, but rather deliver good, hearty meals (think burgers, parmas, pork katsu sandos, Nasi goreng and truffle fries), cold beers and a tightly curated list of cocktails and a scattering of natural wines. On tap, you’ll find Young Henrys, VB, Stone & Wood and Balter. If you’re keen to get reacquainted with an old fave, rally the crew for a brew (or two) and check it out.
