Winter Harvest Festival Food festivals, op-shop hauls and Broadway musicals – things to do on the Gold Coast this weekend

Food festivals, op-shop hauls and Broadway musicals – things to do on the Gold Coast this weekend

If you've been dreaming of a food-filled weekend with a side of tractor pulling, marathon running, cocktail sipping and second-hand rummaging, then boy, oh boy, do we have some exciting news for you. This weekend brings the final events of the Scenic Rim Eat Local Week, Gold Coast Marathon, school holiday fun and a bounty of other shindigs that will have you shaking off the winter blues and living your best life. Here's a list of the best things you can eat, see and experience this weekend, from Thursday June 30 until Sunday July 3.

Warm up your taste buds and prep for a weekend of fine food at Eat Local WeekTreat your senses to two days of feasting out in the Scenic Rim. Saturday brings the signature event of Eat Local Week – the Winter Harvest Festival. Hosted in Aratula from 10:00 am-4:00 pm, the festival aims to serve up the Scenic Rim on a platter. You can meet the farmers, taste the food, buy the produce, enjoy live entertainment and watch the annual tractor pull. We recommend cleaning out your esky and bringing your appetite because you shan’t be leaving empty-handed. Outside of the Winter Harvest Festival, this weekend also brings the opportunity to do art & tasting amongst the camels, make a vegetable and flower bouquet, head to the Magic Long Mushroom Lunch, enjoy a distillery tour, treat yourself to a chef’s table dinner and dig into a low & slow barbeque.

Rock out with your frock out at this massive fashion saleIf you consider yourself an op shop connoisseur, then gird your loins and get ready to spend Sunday sorting through a bounty of second-hand goodies at the Frockarama Fashion Sale. Held at Carrara Markets on Sunday from 9:00 am-2:00 pm, Frockarama is free to attend and is offering up racks and racks of preloved up-market brands, quirky vintage, designer labels that have only been worn once, excess stock from local brands, jewellery makers, once worn shoes and handbags.

Run, forest, run! Lace-up your joggers for the Gold Coast MarathonIf, for some reason, the idea of running kilometres on end fills you with excitement, then head to the Broadwater Parklands in Southport on Saturday and Sunday for the 42nd Gold Coast Marathon. Why people choose to pay money to run really does baffle my non-athletic brain. Alas, we are here to cheer on those brave souls that have been training and are ready to have a crack at the events, which include the marathon, wheelchair marathon, half marathon, junior dashes and the Bravehearts 777 Marathon. Good luck!

Enjoy a beachside sonic meditation for the BLEACH* program launchWhile BLEACH* Festival doesn’t officially start until August, the organisers are treating Gold Coast locals to a free, world premiere of BEACONS by renowned percussionist and composer Vanessa Tomlinson and sound artist Lawrence English. Prepare to witness orchestral musicians from the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University play while positioned on a cliff face over the moonlit ocean waves. Head down to Ed Hardy Park before 5:00 pm on Thursday to enjoy this free event.

Cosy on up by the fireplace at this Christmas in July feastThroughout July, the D’Arcy Arms Irish Pub crew are transforming their digs into a festive wonderland for the annual Christmas in July feast. There will be a roaring fire, succulent Christmas roast, pumpkin soup and traditional pudding with brandy custard. Bookings are essential for this cosy festive celebration.

Set sail for YOT Club’s Fall festival and Sax Sundays series: Jump on board the uber-luxe YOT Club for a floating festival like no other! On Saturday there are two sessions available for the Fall Festival Series, where you can dance your heart out surrounded by palm trees, a ferris wheel and the breathtaking Gold Coast skyline. If a Sunday sesh is more your vibe, you can board the YOT Club at 4:00 pm and soak up a healthy dose of sexy sax, music from resident DJs and plenty of good times. You’ll need a ticket to both of these events, so grab yours and gather your crew for an epic weekend on the water.

Stroll past some street art at SURFACE FestivalThis Sunday kicks off SURFACE, the Miami Street Art Festival that sees art explode onto footpaths, fence lines, laneways and walls. Popular events include the fence line exhibition, sunset skate seshes, Social Muscle Club and much more! Plan your street art route and view the entire program online.

Head to the theatre and watch Come From AwayThe Tony® and Olivier Award-winning musical Come From Away is heading to HOTA, Home of the Arts, with the opening show happening this Friday. Come From Away tells the remarkable true story of thousands of stranded passengers and the small town in Newfoundland, Canada, that welcomed them all amidst the 9/11 crisis. The show is only on the Gold Coast for a limited season, so grab your ticket to avoid missing out on this captivating new musical that has taken the world by storm.

Dance along to free live music on The Lawn: There’s something about sitting back and soaking up live tunes that makes life seem that little bit lighter. Add a cold drink and some delicious snacks into the equation, and you have a recipe for a good time. Garden Kitchen & Bar offers just that, a chance to sit in the sunshine, listen to some live tunes and revel in the good vibes with your mates. You can start your weekend on a high note by dropping low and shaking off the work week with free RnB tunes on Friday night from 5:00 pm. If a Sunday sesh is more your style, then you won’t want to miss an afternoon of live music from Gold Coast boys, the Mckenzie Band. Let them soundtrack the sunset while you sip on a beverage and enjoy a snack or two from the delicious legends at Container Kitchen.

Savour the flavours of expertly mixed cocktails: The after-work cocktail event that has taken Brisbane by storm is arriving on the Gold Coast, with the Savour Series being hosted at the Island Rooftop in Surfers Paradise. You can toast to the end of another work week on Friday evening and sample a bounty of cocktail fusions. This Friday will focus on all of your favourite Sex and The City-themed cocktails. You’ll want to grab a ticket to this one!

Paccas Pirates

Keep the kids happy with these school holiday activities: Schools out for the … winter? Keep your groms entertained over the break with fun activations around the Gold Coast. Robina Town Centre is encouraging kids to rebuild the world with LEGO from 10:00 am-2:00 pm each day. HOTA is hosting Postcards from the Edge, a free, immersive and interactive exhibition showcasing the artist’s travel adventures from around the world. A life-sized pirate ship has sailed into Pacific Fair and is packed full of free workshops, treasure hunts and sword fights for the kids to enjoy for free. Krispy Kreme is inviting kids to become certified doughnut decorators at their Surfers Paradise store and decorate two Original Glazed® doughnuts with a range of fun and funky toppings. Lastly, Gold Coast Libraries are hosting a range of workshops to help educate your little ones on how to be part of a sustainable future. Think bee craft, eco hanging gardens, LEGO nature build challenges and more!

Catch the SUNS vs Collingwood clash at Metricon Stadium: Don your finest red and yellow scarf to support Gold Coast SUNS when they battle it out against Collingwood at Metricon on Saturday evening. The first bounce is at 7:25 pm, though we recommend heading out earlier when gates open at 5:30 pm so that you’ve got plenty of time to do all the essential pre-game rituals. You know, like finding your seat, getting a pie, scoping out the best hot chips and revving up the opposition with some well-timed quips. Some tickets are still available, so grab yours and get set for this epic match.

Treat yourself to a spot of high tea at Sanctuary Cove: Every Saturday and Sunday from 1:00-4:00 pm, the InterContinental Sanctuary Cove is honouring the High Tea ritual with a decadent and immersive experience crafted alongside the fine teamakers of Tea Forté. Sip on the finest brews as your tea guide takes you on an opulent culinary journey, with tiers of sweet and savoury delights, champagne and a selection of fine Tea Forté teas. Bookings are essential and can be made online via the InterContinental website.

We do our best to remove cancelled events but be sure to check the organiser’s own event page for the most current updates.
