When you take into account that it comes from the genius mind of Andrew Lloyd Webber and is based on a smash-hit movie, School of Rock the musical is automatically set up to be one hell of a ride. Since opening on Broadway back in 2015, the production has garnered some serious critical acclaim and smashed records harder than a high-hat cymbal during a drum solo. With a production dream team including three-time Tony nominee Glenn Slater and Downton Abbey’s Oscar-winning Julian Fellowes on board, as well as a cast including legit musicians (yep, even the kids), this is one show that walks the talk when it comes to authenticity.
In case you haven’t seen the movie (who even are you?!), School of Rock follows failed rockstar and general loser Dewey Finn – posing as a prep school teacher to make some extra cash, he takes his class of straight-laced bookworms and turns them into a band of guitar-shreddin’, bass-slappin’ cool kids. Die-hard fans of the movie take note – the stage production has a brand-new twist in the storyline, as Dewey takes time out of his busy teaching schedule to fall in love with the beautiful but uptight headmistress Miss Mullins. This deviation from the movie adds a bit of a cute note to the originally rock-heavy mentor story, but you can rest assured that the romance doesn’t take away from the core theme – music, baby!
