Now in its ninth year, the 2019 instalment of Sample Food Festival will feature some of Australia’s best chefs, including Matt Moran, Federico Zanellato of two-hatted LuMi Dining Sydney, author and chef Luca Ciano, as well as the Gold Coast’s own (and festival first-timer) Alex Munoz Labart from Restaurant Labart. Attendees can work their way through $5 and $10 tasting plates showcasing menus from local restaurants, with names like La Casita, Raes on Wategos, Harvest Newrybar, Bang Bang, No Bones, Barrio, Shelter, Yulli’s, Federal Doma Cafe and Balcony Bar & Oyster Co. to be plating up magic throughout the day.
Around 100 market stalls, designers and producers will line the showgrounds, with live music, cooking demonstrations and a celebrity cook-off to provide plenty of entertainment in between feasting on tasting plates. Stone & Wood will have a pop-up for beer swillers, served alongside wines from Clunes-based producer Jilly and spirits from local makers Lord Byron Distillery, Cape Byron Distillery and Husk Distillers. Expect some fierce-yet-friendly competition when Alex Munoz Labart joins Matt Moran and Federico Zanellato on the judging panel of the festival’s coveted Golden Fork Awards, which sees participating restaurants battle it out to win the title of best $5 or $10 tasting plate. This year, the festival will also include a series of unmissable lead-up events including the Chef’s Fire and Forage lunch on Friday September 6, catered for by chefs Federico Zanellato (Lumi Dining), Francisco Smoje (Barrio), Jason Barratt (Paper Daisy) and Alastair Waddell (Harvest Newrybar). There’s also workshops like the Foraging Tour & Fermentation Masterclass with Harvest’s own forager Peter Hardwick as part of the festival program.
