Can you smell the popcorn? The HOTA cinema has reopened for socially distanced movie experiences!

Going to the cinemas has been quite high on our list of 'things we have missed doing during the pandemic' – right up there with hugging our mates, touching our faces and being able to sit down at our favourite local restaurants and cafes. This weekend marks a very welcome milestone for local film buffs, with HOTA officially reopening the doors to its boutique cinema. The popcorn machine is back on, the reels are ready to roll and there are 20 seats waiting to be filled.

The thrilling news of the return of HOTA’s cinema schedule comes off the back of the recent easing of restrictions for Queenslanders. When the state government made the announcement, HOTA CEO Criena Gehrke moved to reopen the cinema in a bid to fill the social void brought about by the pandemic and begin to bring some form of normality back for Gold Coasters. Each screening is limited to just 20 viewers and strict social-distancing measures will very much still apply, with ticket holders allocated seats for each film.

From Saturday June 6, HOTA will host 12 screenings a day, rolling out a thematic program that covers classic and family movies, independent films and award-winning masterpieces. The program has been curated to ensure that the Australian and international film releases that went under the radar during the pandemic are given time in the spotlight. While HOTA as a whole won’t be back in operation for a little while yet, the move to reopen the cinema was dubbed the ‘first cab off the rank’ in the precinct’s return to theatre experiences and satiating the strong local appetite for the arts.

With just 20 moviegoers at each screening, you’ll want be quick with your bookings – jump to the HOTA website to browse the program and secure your seats.
