Roots festivals to pop-up dance parties – HOTA drops a summer series of 20 events over 15 days

When summer rolls around, an air of excitement always hits. There's a little extra spring in your step and the cheer stretches from ear to ear – and it's all in anticipation of the year's end and being able to spend time with family and friends. From December 1–15, HOTA is capturing the thrill of spending summer 'at home' on the Gold Coast by hosting one of the biggest event series' the arts and culture precinct has ever seen. Staying put this summer? You'll be glad you did.

HOME at HOTA will see a mammoth 20 events roll out over 15 long, sun-kissed days and balmy nights, featuring everything from music festivals and pop-up dance parties to skate jams, home-grown burlesque and saucy cabaret. Running from December 1–15, the scorching event series will kick off with Gold Coast’s first-ever Roots Music Festival (Sunday December 1), which will see a star-studded line-up of roots artists including Little Georgia, Karl S Williams, Bobby Alu and Band of Frequencies sending the sounds of summer sky-high as festival-goers enjoy sunshine, food, drinks and views over the tropical parklands. On Friday December 6, HOTA’s Outdoor Stage will host the ultimate hip-hop and RnB dance party with an unmissable concert by dance-worthy beat makers Hot Brown Honey and hype junkie YO! MAFIA.

On Sunday December 8, the free Concrete Culture event will see HOTA transform into an open-air skateboarding mecca, with Precinct Skate Shop converting the Outdoor Stage into a ‘deck heads’ haven with shreddable obstacles to be hit by the pros in a series of trick-demos and jams across the afternoon. Ladies of shred Yeah Girl will present its Homecoming exhibition, and local brands Perve Endings and Radolescent will provide the playlist as skaters explore the markets and food trucks.

Saucy drag and burlesque smackdown RUMBLE! will provide a splash of mid-week fun on Wednesday December 11 as headliners Martini McFly and Sydney’s Coco Jumbo battle it out over three rounds of performance, challenges and improvised chaos – think of this as a game show of diva proportions! Then, on Friday December 13 the unmissable Dance Beneath the Stars event will take over the Outdoor Stage for the ultimate after-dark freestyle dance party. Spectacular ten-piece brass outfit Hot Potato Band will bring the tunes for the toe-tapping, hip-shaking summer party, which will give a nod to the vintage dance-hall parties of yesteryear.

The true meaning of ‘home’ will be explored at the Deadly Hearts: A Celebration of Australian Indigenous Music event on Saturday December 14, which will feature music from some of Australia’s best past, present and emerging artists to shine a light on shared stories, culture and identity. The Calling Home concert on the Outdoor Stage on Sunday December 15 will wrap up HOME’s 15 days of spectacular events with an evening of euphoric arrangements from Lior, Parvyn Singh, the Camerata Orchestra and Australian Voices Choir, with each score speaking of home, faith and traditions.

Friends, that is just the tip of a very large iceberg. To scope out the full HOME program and secure tickets, head to the HOTA website.
