Beer festivals to beachside billycarts – five unmissable events happening on the Gold Coast this spring

Spring is here, which means it's events galore! If you're well and truly out of winter hibernation and are on the hunt for fun and delicious things to do before summer hits, then we've got you! From sugar-coated dessert festivals to beachside billycart derbys, here are five Gold Coast events to put in your calendar this spring.

Spring Racing at Aquis Park Gold Coast Turf Club, September 22 to November 6
The flowers are blooming, the birds are chirping (very early, mind you) and the sun is shining – spring is in the air! You know what that means? Spring racing season is back, baby! It all kicks off with pink hues and plenty of champagne this Saturday September 22 with the Pink Ribbon Cup Race Day, a renowned charity event that raises funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. You’ll have a few weeks rest before the exclusive canary bar is rolled out for the Cox Plate on Saturday October 27. Then on Saturday November 3 it’s Derby Day, which is set to be a glamorous affair with the Derby Day Party by Moët Ice Imperial sure to attract plenty of fabulous fillies. It all comes to a head on Tuesday November 6 for the race that stops the nation – Melbourne Cup Day 2018. Punch those dates in your diary, ladies and gents.

Crafted Beer & Cider Festival, Saturday October 6
Beer lovers, this is your ultimate day out. Kurrawa Park in Broadbeach will be transformed into a haven for all things amber, with the festival shining the light on more than 35 of the country’s best brewers – there will be more than 150 beers and ciders up for tasting! Settle in for an afternoon and evening sipping the best drops from some of your favourite brewers, as well as smaller up-and-coming names. Expect a solid line-up of live music, a killer selection of food trucks (including the likes of Mac from Way BackThe Wiener Haus and SoCal Tacos) and plenty of entertainment. It’s a ticketed event, so don’t miss out!

The Village Markets Turns 10, Sunday October 7
Excuse me, what? Yes, it’s been ten years since The Village Markets first began and we’re not okay with how fast time is passing by. However we’re totally okay with what the ladies behind TVM have in store to mark the milestone of their wildly popular boutique market. Sunday October 7 will be one of the biggest markets yet, with live music by Mitch King, TONES AND I and Lily Budiasa, plus some of TVM’s most successful stallholders will be making a special birthday appearance – think Peony, Kivari, F+H Jewellery, Children of the Tribe and Duke of London. The Craft Parlour will be hosting a paper dream-catcher workshop, hairdressers Paper Rokk will be hosting a ‘braid and glitter bar’ (we’re so there), and there will be a bunch of prizes to be won on the day.

Vodafone Gold Coast 600 King of Burleigh Hill, Sunday October 14
This incredibly popular seaside event is a fun-filled favourite for many Gold Coasters. If you’ve never been, make sure you get down there this year to soak it up. It’s basically a day of action-packed billycart races down Burleigh Hill. Locals enter their fast-and-furious hand-crafted vehicles and race down the custom-built race course … it’s certainly not for the faint hearted, but it makes for some excellent spectating! There’s entertainment for all ages, live music and food trucks to dispense the deliciousness. This is an annual Burleigh tradition, so get down there!

Dessert Festival at NightQuarter, Saturday November 10
Pals, calories don’t count on weekends, so consider this an official invitation to go nuts at NightQuarter’s Dessert Festival this spring. Yep, forget that summer bod for just one night, because this is one sugar-filled soiree you won’t want to miss out on. The Helensvale precinct will be celebrating all things sweet with a ridiculously tempting line-up of desserts. We’re talking loaded ice-cream cookie sandwiches, hot doughnut fries, unicorn fudge, Nutella-marshmallow toasties, cookie dough, piping-hot jam doughnuts … yeah, you get the gist. Forget the savouries, you’re having dessert for dinner on November 10.
