Bust a move at HOTA’s Dancing on the Green

When was the last time you had a good dance? Like a really heart-rate raising, booty shaking, goofy-grin inducing (sober) dance? Last night? Last month? Can't remember? No matter when it was, it's high time you let loose and get a groove on, and lucky for you we have just the event! Every month, you're invited to cut some sweet shapes at a series of free sunset dance sessions hosted on the lawn at HOTA. There'll be good vibes galore as you unleash your finest amongst an audience of like-minded dance enthusiasts at Dancing on the Green.

Whether you’ve got mad skills like MJ or you (like us) generally struggle to put one foot in front of the other without tripping over, Dancing on the Green is here to have you digging deep and unleashing your best moves in public just for the fun of it. From swing to salsa, Bollywood to booty beats – each month will bring a new flavour with a live band or DJ.

Saturday April 28 – Bollywood
For the first instalment of Dancing on the Green, HOTA is going Bollywood! Join Brisbane’s leading Bollywood dance company, Dance Masala, from 4:00 pm for a vibrant, energetic and lively fusion of Indian and Western dance. Not only is it an excellent workout, it can be done by absolutely anybody so there’s no excuses! From 6:00 pm Melbourne’s TekTek ensemble will deliver an eclectic musical fusion inspired by Bollywood, surf, the tropical jungle, late-night Balkan weddings, 1960s chic and shamanistic desert rituals. Intrigued? You should be.

Saturday May 19 – Swing
Head back in time to when booze was banned for a saucy swing dance workshop with the masters of fancy footwork, Swing On In. Whether your Lindy hop is legendary or you wouldn’t know your Charleston from your Collegiate Shag, this event is guaranteed to have you smiling from ear to ear. From 6:00 pm, bust a move with Rhydian Lewis and The Residuals, a big band with a hot blend of jazz, swing, blues and boogie. Rhydion brings the kind of energy that will bring you to your feet and onto the dance floor before you even quite know what is happening. Hot tip, just go with it.

Saturday June 9 – An Afro Beat
From dancehall to street-style Afro beats, SK Simeon of Uganda takes over with a union of dancers and African rhythms, roots, reggae and soul. The session is high energy and high fun so even if you’re not gifted with all of the right moves, you’ll have a damn fine time doing it and after all, isn’t that the point?

What are you waiting for? Gather your gaggle, kick off your shoes, learn the rhythms of the day, then dance the evening away under the stars. Dancing on the Green is for friends and families, left feet and professionals so come one, come all and dance like nobody is watching. Oh, and did we mention it was free?
