Get set to immerse yourself in inflatable installations and floating exhibitions – Brisbane Festival is coming back with a bang

If you can believe it, in two short months it will be September. Although this year seems like it is passing by quicker than you can sing Earth, Wind & Fire’s catchy song, that's not necessarily a bad thing, as the arrival of September means the return of our favourite city-wide fiesta – Brisbane Festival! The beloved celebration will set our city alight from September 3–25 with a thrilling three-week program that is shaping up to be the brightest party yet. From an art-filled boat cruising down Brisbane River and dance performances inside a bubble to much-anticipated stage shows and enchanting gardens full of larger-than-life florals, it doesn't get more weird and wonderful than this.

Set to impress, the 2021 Brisbane Festival will showcase a whopping 139 productions in 223 locations across the city – with this year’s theme being Brightly Brisbane. Sail into the festival via Northshore Hamilton, which will be one of two ports of call for Brisbane’s Art Boat, a brand-new floating art experience cruising the Brisbane River with multi-sensory art pieces. Hamilton will also host dreamy inflatable art installations Airship Orchestra and Sky Castle, as well as exhilarating dance performance RED, where two dancers perform inside a transparent bubble as the air they breathe slowly runs out. Also debuting at the festival is the highly anticipated production of Trent Dalton’s Boy Swallows Universe at QPAC, whilst The Tivoli will be home to a First Nations-led program of music including the world premiere of Restless Dream, a mesmerising production of music and dance. The party doesn’t stop there as design performance event First Nations Fashion: Walking in Two Worlds will catwalk into the precinct alongside cabaret extravaganza Skyfall and many more breathtaking showcases.

Over at West Village, vibrant inflatable installations will take root for Lost, an enchanting garden of extinct and endangered floral illuminations created by Australian artist Amanda Parer. Brisbane Powerhouse will have a dog’s day out in Let’s Be Friends Furever, a community crowd-sourced homage to our four-legged friends that will transform the theatre into Brisbane’s artiest off-leash area. Following the success of last year’s cul-de-sac concerts, Street Serenades hits the road again with some top-notch artists including indie-folk outfit Boy & Bear, pop princess Christine Anu and Eurovision songstress Montaigne. There will also be performances from Queensland Ballet and must-see acts spanning circus, cabaret, dance, DJ sets and more. The program will go out with a bang when Sunsuper Riverfire makes a glorious return on Saturday September 25. Hungry for more? Fill up on delicious eats and entertainment at the BOQ Festival Garden, a bustling hub full of live tunes, roving performers, flavoursome bites, cocktails and mysterious interactive adventures that’s popping up in South Bank for the duration of the festival.

This is just a sneak peek of the beast that is Brisbane Festival. You can dive in to the 2021 Brisbane Festival program and purchase tickets to events here.
