From bendy archers to sandy sundowners – five unmissable events at BLEACH* 2020!

BLEACH* is set to make a triumphant return to the Gold Coast – hurrah! Kicking off on Thursday November 12, the annual arts and cultural event will run for 11 action-packed days, with audiences invited to experience the best of the city through one-of-a-kind contemporary art, live music, cabaret, theatre, dance and storytelling, with the magic to unfold across three key precincts – Burleigh Heads, Chevron Island and the Botanic Gardens in Benowa. While the entire festival program is well and truly worthy of the spotlight, we’ve cherry-picked our top five events for your viewing pleasure. From parties at an abandoned block of houses to acrobatic archers – go ahead and clear your calendar because you definitely won't want to miss these.

Chez Nous, Chevron Island, November 12–14, 20–21
One event, nine very different experiences. Chez Nous is the performance equivalent of a mixed bag of lollies, except the thing about this mixed bag is there are no duds, just tasty treats for your eyeballs. Leave your inhibitions at the door and party around an abandoned block of houses, step into the parlour and be awestruck by Shannen Jones (aka The Girl With No Bones) as she shoots living targets with an actual bow and arrow … with her feet! Surrender to some spirited jazz with Baartzy’s Brew, spy a ephemeral and thought-provoking artwork by Glennys Briggs and bounce around with blonde bombshell J’aiMime as she twists herself upside down and inside out of a giant balloon – it promises to be electrifying, a little weird and more than a little bit irreverent. If 2020 has left you craving spontaneity and after-dark adventures, jump over here to grab your tickets.

Block Party, Burleigh Heads, November 15
Roll out a rug, slather on some sunscreen and strap yourselves in because your Sunday arvo is set to scorching. Justins Park in Burleigh Heads will provide the perfect backdrop for this incredible free concert headlined by powerhouse rapper Jesswar, a strong voice for First Nations culture and pioneer for the new wave of Australian hip-hop. Jesswar will be joined by Siala Robson, who was crowned runner-up in The Voice 2020, Wildheart (pictured), The Kinship CollectiveKelsey Iris and singer-songwriter Robbie Miller. Nab a shady spot under a tree and settle in for five incredible hours of live music – it’s going to be a ripper. The concert is free however you need to register here to attend.

Bleach* Club, Burleigh Heads, November 12–22
Fancy a couple of cheeky sundowners on the sand? Us too! Then you will definitely want to check out Bleach* Club, which will pop-up in Justins Park throughout the duration of the festival. The beach bar will be the perfect place to while away an afternoon as you watch as the waves roll in. Local DJs will be manning the decks to pump out a stellar soundtrack for you to float away to some ambient tunes and killer beats. The Bleach* Club kicks off from midday daily from Thursday November 12 and runs through to Sunday November 22 – you know where to find us.

Sounds Like Spring, Gold Coast Regional Botanical Gardens, November 22
It’s not every day you have the opportunity to enjoy a live set from an internationally revered chamber music ensemble, for free. Sounds Like Spring is your invitation to do just that and revel in the rich sounds of the Southern Cross Soloists (SXS), which is comprised of leading musicians from across the country. The SXS is known for creating and performing dynamic, unique and world-class musical experiences for audiences of all ages and this is definitely no exception. In fact, the concert has been curated to highlight the works of Elena Kats-Chernin, who is widely regarded as Australia’s finest female composer and has been hailed Australia’s answer to Mozart. The concert is free to attend but as with everything in this new world order, you must register here. The word unmissable gets thrown around a lot but this truly is a once-in-a-lifetime cultural event.

Done & Dappered, Burleigh Heads, November 13–15, 21–22
If your manly mane is in need of a spruce, swing by the pop-up barber shop and treat your locks to a fresh cut from the students at Arcadia College, who have been learning the craft from legendary Burleigh barber Joe Tongi aka The GodBarber. Audio-G project will also be on hand slinging beats so there’s no awkward chit-chat here, just damn good cuts. Whether it’s a slick fade, sensible short back and sides or something a little bolder, Done & Dappered will have you looking and feeling a million bucks, for free. The catch? There isn’t one. Youngsters under 18 must be accompanied by an adult or guardian. Check out the session times here.
