Bleach* Festival unveils its ambitious 18-day city-wide program for 2018

With the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games just around the corner, our fine city is gearing up for one the most pivotal years in its history. Just when we thought we couldn't cram any more excitement into the first half of 2018, the talented crew behind Bleach* Festival drops its most genre-bending and ambitious program ever. The 18 days of action kicks off on Thursday March 29 – here's what's in store.

The Bleach* Festival 2018 program will feature 140 events and activities, ranging from intimate encounters to large-scale performances and world premieres – the majority of which will be free to the public. This year sees Bleach* Festival collaborate with Festival 2018, the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games arts and culture program (read more about that over here). Bleach* will present 20 of the works within the Festival 2018 artistic program between April 4–15, including outdoor music concert The Spirit of Churaki, which is inspired by the Gold Coast’s first-ever surf lifesaver.

The entire Bleach* Festival program will push the boundaries this year, with a series of performances across all corners of the Gold Coast – from beaches and parks to hotels and gathering places. Everyday locals will be invited to open their homes to a series of intimate living room performances as part of the premiere of Rimini Protokoll’s boundary-bushing ‘Home Visit‘, while contemporary dance company The Farm will return with ground-breaking works ‘TIDE‘ (two performers on a sandbar at Currumbin Estuary for 49 hours!) and ‘The Ninth Wave‘, which will be held on Surfers Paradise beach. For the adventurous souls, the ‘Wave Fields‘ experience is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to spend the night sleeping on the beach wrapped in a blanket of sound by internationally renowned artist Lawrence English … we’re very intrigued.

There’s also a moon-lit kayak tour (with a difference) called ‘Quiet by Nature‘, and for locals that want to take the stage themselves, participatory performance ‘Yes, We Dance!‘ will be your time to shine. Pals, that’s just scratching the surface of what’s to come for Bleach* Festival this year – jump online to check out the full program. It all kicks off on Thursday March 29 with a free all-ages party at Bond University headlined by musical masters Melbourne Ska Orchestra – then the flood gates will open for 18 days of arts and cultural goodness.
