The Chats, The Dreggs, Pierce Brothers and Bugs to headline all-ages drive-in music festival

The Chats, The Dreggs, Pierce Brothers and Bugs to headline all-ages drive-in music festival

Around this time, music lovers across the country begin to plan outlandish outfits and assemble their vans, campers and tents to make the annual pilgrimage to North Byron Parklands for Splendour in the Grass, but things look a little different this year. In this crazy post-COVID landscape in which we now reside, music festivals as we know them (i.e. mass gatherings of people) are off the table for the foreseeable future. While this situation hurts the collective heart of music lovers everywhere, there is a glimmer of good news to get us through the cold winter – a drive-in music festival by the name of Airwaves is happening at Nambour Showgrounds in July.

You’re probably pretty familiar with the good old-fashioned drive-in movies but Airwaves Festival is taking that concept and applying it to a music festival environ to give live-music lovers a little taste of the goods when we need it most. The all-ages festival will kick off on Friday July 10 and run through to Sunday July 12 and will feature sets from The Chats, The Dreggs, Pierce Brothers, Bugs and Sahara Beck, to name a few. Fittingly, the theme is ‘outer space’ so go ahead and start planning your galactic get-up.

So how does it work specifically? Well, those eager to smell, see, hear and taste live music again will be able to drive in, park up and enjoy a night out under the stars from the comfort of their own vehicle. The festival features a show on Friday and Saturday nights as well as a late-afternoon session on Sunday, with tickets for each day sold separately. All festival-goers will be COVID-covered with the team implementing procedures including contactless ticketing, car-door delivery of the festival’s Cosmic Crave snack packs, hand sanitiser distribution thanks to Greenfest Solutions and constant reminders of the 1.5-metre distancing by the crew. As you can expect, parking spaces on the Nambour Showgrounds are extremely limited and tickets are on sale now through OzTix, on the Airwaves Festival Instagram and Facebook pages, as well as online hereAirwaves Festival is from the creative team behind Australia’s largest busking festival, Buskers by the Lake, and inspired by some highly successful drive-in raves and concerts in Europe. It’s hoped that the event encourages a swag of others to follow suit to help re-boot the country’s struggling entertainment industry, which was dealt a devastating blow in 2020. If you love live music, here’s your chance to show your support.
