Innovation celebrated at Australian Institute of Architects’ 2019 Gold Coast Regional Architecture Awards

The Gold Coast is home to many talented architects and ambitious buildings, but two notable exceptions were highlighted last month in an awards ceremony celebrating creativity and innovation in our great region.

The winners of the Australian Institute of Architects’ 2019 Gold Coast Regional Architecture Awards have been announced, with eight impressive projects making it through to the 2019 Queensland State Architecture AwardsHOTA Outdoor Stage by ARM Architecture has been awarded the Gold Coast Regional Building of the Year. As the first realised element of ARM’s HOTA Masterplan, the multi-use building is a blackbox theatre with a riverside entrance and a back wall that can fold away completely to open onto the amphitheatre and host major public events.

The Gold Coast Regional House of the Year was awarded to Mermaid Multihouse by Partners Hill with Hogg & Lamb, a duplex that presents as a single house from the street but offers detached units inside. The space opens to the exterior, acting as a breeze-catcher and lightwell that gives each adjacent room extended space, while also operating as a living space on its own. Projects that received a named award or commendation are now in the running for the 2019 Queensland State Architecture Awards, to be announced on Friday June 14 at Howard Smith Wharves in Brisbane. Buy tickets to the state awards event online.
